Calabash Real Estate

Located in between the town of Carolina Shores and the small barrier island of Sunset Beach, just over the border from South Carolina, Calabash is a quaint fishing village with numerous seafood restaurants, ice cream stores and small boutiques.  Nestled on the banks of the Calabash River, which local shrimpers and fishing boats use to access the Intracoastal Waterway and the Atlantic Ocean, the town of Calabash is famous for the type of seafood preparation that was pioneered within its borders.

Though some restaurateurs may claim they have a unique recipe, Calabash-style seafood cooking is typically associated with the use of corn meal for the frying process.  This allows for a lighter covering compared to using flour, and there are many seafood restaurants in the Carolinas that employ this technique.

With several iconic restaurants along the Calabash River waterfront, which includes a small dock to stroll on and check out the fishing vessels, Calabash has been a culinary destination since the 1930s.  A little known fact about Calabash is that it was named for the gourds that previously grew in the region.  It is often confused with the town of Carolina Shores, a small community nearby with a country club and golf course properties.

Things to do in Calabash

Aside from charter fishing or indulging a craving for seafood, the town of Calabash offers abundant opportunities for golf, as it is practically surrounded by golf courses.  A few of the other top activities in Calabash include going kayaking or boating on the Intracoastal Waterway, bird watching at the Bird Island Reserve, or visiting nearby Sunset Beach.

For many, the town of Calabash will always be associated with thoughts of fried seafood, hush puppies, mini-golf, shopping, golf course properties and the nearby city of Myrtle Beach.  What many people don’t realize is that the area is home to a number of exclusive gated communities with water views and private docks along the Intracoastal Waterway, which allow the owners to quickly boat over to Bird Island, Little River and the deserted beaches located south of Sunset Beach.
